The Two Million Mile Honeymoon Luxury Travel at Budget Rates

The Plaza Hotel (New York City)

For Dhara’s birthday this year we had the great fortune of staying at The Plaza Hotel in New York City.  On the weekend we stayed standard rooms were going for almost $900/night but for our stay we were able to cash in one of two “complimentary night certificates” we earned through the Fairmont Visa from Chase.

This was easily the nicest hotel we have ever stayed in and the service and attention to detail was incredible from the second we arrived.  They granted us an early check-in and upgraded us to a Deluxe Room which we quickly entered to find a complimentary birthday cake for Dhara alongside a personalized hand signed card.

The Deluxe Room is distinguished from the Standard Room by its massive bathroom which includes both a standalone shower as well as a tub.  All rooms come with their own iPads (used to control the thermostat & lights, order room service, summon the butler, etc.), antique furniture, high ceilings, and 24-carat gold plated bathroom fixtures.

In addition to the incredible room we were also able to take advantage of the historic Palm Court restaurant located just off the entrance foyer on the main floor.  The Palm Court is famous for Afternoon Tea which we were able to experience our first day, and we even came back again the next morning for breakfast.  The Palm Court is quite expensive compared to restaurants we normally frequent ($60 per person for tea service & roughly $35 per person for breakfast) but we were able to use a few of our Fairmont President’s Club dining certificates to cover part of our tab.

Situated on the Southeast corner of Central Park, The Plaza is conveniently located for anyone wishing to visit some of the tourist sites of Midtown Manhattan.  For example, we were just steps away from loads of great restaurants and were able to quickly walk over to Broadway to catch a performance of The Book of Mormon.

How you can stay at the Plaza Hotel for Free:

We booked our stay for free using certificates we earned from our Chase Fairmont Visa Credit Card.

Fairmont

Fairmont Visa Credit Card from Chase

This card offers you (2) complimentary night certificates at a Fairmont Property, and (4) $25 breakfast certificates after spending $1000 in the first 3 months.  The card also offers Fairmont President’s Club Premier Status which comes with another $50 dining certificate, a suite upgrade, and a room upgrade each year.  Fairmont owns and operates a number of historic grand hotels around the globe, and it is easy to use your certificates at most of them but the Plaza has the most restrictions/blackout dates so if you’re looking to stay there you should plan ahead.  For example, we would have liked to spend two nights there but there was only enough availability for us to spend one, so we’ll have to use the other one at a later date.  The good news is that they allow you to use your dining and upgrade certificates on complimentary stays so, in addition to getting our free night, we used a free room upgrade certificate and $125 worth of dining certificates.
