The Two Million Mile Honeymoon Luxury Travel at Budget Rates

Lufthansa Business Class ATH-MUC & TAP Business Class MUC-LIS

Using miles to book short Business Class flights within Europe is usually a terrible value because “European” Business Class Seats are simply regular Economy Seats with the middle seats left unoccupied.  However, flying Business Class also enables you to access the Business Class Lounge before your flight and there is some value in that.

In our case, we actually booked three flights on three consecutive days on one ticket for 20k United Miles each (now 30k miles each after the devaluation).  Our award flight included Santorini to Athens (Economy only flight), Athens to Munich, and Munich to Lisbon on three consecutive days, all on one award.  We had to connect twice to get from Santorini to Lisbon, so I decided it would be nice to use the 23hr layover trick to book a one day trip to a city I wanted to visit- Munich.  So, for three flights (two in Business Class), access to two Business Class lounges (there isn’t one in Santorini) and a 23hr visit to Munich, I thing we got a pretty good value for our miles.

Lufthansa Business Class Lounge Athens

Surprisingly, Lufthansa actually has their own Business Class Lounge in Athens which was incredibly small but also completely empty, and for such a small lounge they had a decent selection of food and an incredible selection of alcohol.

The food was a nice mix of German and Greek.

They also had two German beers on tap (which is my favorite since I love to play with the tap) as well as an impressive selection of whiskey.

A quick google search showed that the 16 Year Old Lagavulin was the most expensive whiskey they had (about $100 per bottle) so I gave it a try – very smooth and smokey.

We loved being the only people in the Lufthansa Lounge and thought the little lounge was a very nice place to have a meal and a drink before our flight to Munich.

Lufthansa Flight from Athens to Munich

As I said earlier, Business Class seats in Europe are essentially economy seats with the middle seat left open so we had a lot of space between us but the same poor legroom as a standard economy seat – not too much to get excited about.  However, the Business Class service from Lufthansa was very nice with a lunch accompanied by some Warsteiner, a nice German pilsner.

23 Hour Layover in Munich

23 hours was the perfect amount of time to get a small sample of Munich from the Hofbrauhaus to the Marienplatz to the Englischer Garten.

Lufthansa Lounge Munich (Schengen Area)

We were very impressed with the Lufthansa Lounge in Munich.  We knew Munich was one of their hubs but didn’t expect too much from this lounge because it is only for people on short-haul flights within the Schengen Area, but we were pleasantly surprised, especially with their effort to make a section of the lounge seem like a biergarten with long wooden tables and benches, pour it yourself beer, meatloaf, pretzels, and sausages.

TAP Portugal Flight from Munich to Lisbon

Again, we had the same uninspired European Business Class seats, but again the friendly service and a decent meal made the flight enjoyable.
